Begonia 'Erythrophylla' "Beef Steak" is what Great Aunt Ethel and Grandma called the "Beef Steak Begonia". This is one of the oldest hybrid begonias still in cultivation. It was hybridized in Germany in 1845 by crossing B. manicata with B. hydrocotylifolia. The oval leaves are dark olive green color on the top and red on the bottom. They have a shiney, glossy texture. It has a rhizome that trails along the surface of the soil. This variety is very easy to grow just give it bright light and let it get fairly dry between watering. Everyone should have this living piece of history in their home.

Update on my Beef Steak begonia

I wanted to add a photo to my review. These are a must have for the collector of begonias.

Vigorous specimen

I received this plant in excellent condition last year. It is now 18 inches across. The leaves are shiny. Everyone stops to admire it. Very satisfied.

I love my Begonia

My plant came well packaged and is doing just fine in my kitchen window.

Elsie’s grandson

My grandma had this as a large house plant on a pedestal. I got a clipping from her when I was in my late teens. I’m now 67. Grandma is no longer with us but the plant I grew from the clipping is still thriving. I keep it in a northerly window and wait until it starts to wilt before watering.

Beautiful, rare plant

I love these begonias. Steve's packages them extremely well. I buy them whenever availability. When I have enough I'll put them together in a large pot. They also look pretty as a hanging plant,
