Begonia 'Erythrophylla' "Beef Steak" is what Great Aunt Ethel and Grandma called the "Beef Steak Begonia". This is one of the oldest hybrid begonias still in cultivation. It was hybridized in Germany in 1845 by crossing B. manicata with B. hydrocotylifolia. The oval leaves are dark olive green color on the top and red on the bottom. They have a shiney, glossy texture. It has a rhizome that trails along the surface of the soil. This variety is very easy to grow just give it bright light and let it get fairly dry between watering. Everyone should have this living piece of history in their home.
