Euphorbia tithymaloides 'Variegatus' is from the West Indies and Mexico. It was popular as a “pass along plant” because of it is ease of propagation from stem cuttings. Early houseplant growers would give “starts” of this plant to friends and relatives and it spread across the country as a popular houseplant. The stems are succulent and release a white, milky sap when broken. The leaves are green and highly variegated with white and pink. It is sometimes called “Zigzag Plant” or “Devils Backbone” because the stems grow in a zigzag pattern. It also gets another common name “Red Bird Plant” for its tiny red birdlike flowers. Very easy to grow and will tolerate abuse. Do not over water it.
