Martin Sands, of the Royal Botanic Garden in Kew, England, named this new species from Sabah, Borneo in 1990. Begonia amphioxus is an exotic begonia with a shrub-like growth habit. The leaves are lance shaped and pointed at both ends. The large maroon spots on the narrow green leaves give it an “other worldly” appearance. The flowers are green and have an unusual shape but not very showy. This species needs extra humidity and is usually grown in a terrarium; we highly recommend that an upgraded shipping method is selected to provide this begonia with the best opportunity in transit.
This plant needs special care and is not for the beginner. Due to the special growing conditions of this plant we only offer an arrive alive only guarantee and not our normal 30 days. This plant will drop many leaves in transit and within the few days following; this is normal behavior and should be expected. An expedited (Overnight or 2Day) is highly recommended for this extremely delicate Begonia.
Care of Begonia amphioxus:
Shade to partial shade, good under florescent lights, temp. 50 to 85 degrees, allow getting slightly dry between watering, likes extra humidity, does best in an enclosed container.
Family: Begoniaceae
This plant is shipped in a 3 inch pot.
