Vanilla planifolia is the Vanilla Orchid. This is the plant that Vanilla extract comes from. Vanilla is the second most expensive spice in the world, saffron being the most expensive. This is a native vine from Mexico and is grown commercially in Central and South America and Madagascar. It grows on short trellises in the shade of taller trees. Vanilla extract comes from the cured seed pods. The leaves are lance shaped succulent and dark green. The flowers are a greenish yellow color. This is an easy to grow novelty. You can tie it on a stake or let it hang over the container. Grow it in a well-drained potting soil.

Shade to partial sun, temp. 50 to 95 degrees, will vine or staked will grow to 10 to 15 ft. Allow to get slightly dry between waterings.
