Piper methysticum

Piper methysticum, commonly called Kava, is an upright shrub native to Southeast Asia. Is has glossy, green, heart-shaped leaves that grow up to 6 inches long. Like other members of the piperaceae family, it produces long flower spikes that are creamy white in color. The leaves and stems produce a natural secretion, tiny opaque dots, called cystolyths along with black pepper specs. These little crystals & specs are sometimes thought to be pests, but are not harmful & the plant should be secreting them!

  • 6 to 8 feet tall
  • Humidity 50-60%
