Strophocactus wittii (syn. Selenicereus wittii) is a fascinating cactus uniquely adapted to life in the seasonally flooded Amazon basin, where it spend weeks of the year partially submerged in the waters. It grows epiphytically with its flat, leaf-like stems (known as phylloclades) pressed flat against the trunks of trees. When exposed to direct sunlight the stems take on a deep burgundy hue. It is the only cactus with seeds adapted for water dispersal, with each seed containing large, air filled cells that allow them to float on water. This is a night blooming species, one of a few cacti known as Moonflowers. It has pure white flowers that bloom at sunset and wilt shortly after sunrise.
Care of Strophocactus wittii:
- Bright, indirect light
- 50 to 95 degrees
- provide with extra ambient humidity
- Climbing/shingling growth habit
- Allow soil to get fairly dry between waterings
Family : Araceae
This plant is shipped in a 3.5 inch round pot.
