Ficus benghalensis, more commonly known in the US by the common name Ficus Audrey, is the national tree of India and is regarded as holy in many religious traditions. As a banyan fig, it begins life as an epiphyte, setting seed in the branches of other trees, but as it grows it sends aerial roots into the ground that will eventually entangle and overgrow the original support plant. In habitat, F. benghalensis will continue to send down aerial roots that over time will grow into woody trunks, and a single tree can spread over several acres and resemble a grove of trees that are all connected to the main trunk.
As a houseplant it is mostly grown for its attractive elliptical leaves that are deep green with a slightly velvet gloss and contrasting yellow veins that give this plant a clean and minimal look. It is also easier to care for than its cousin, the ever popular Fiddle Leaf Fig (Ficus lyrata).
Care of Ficus benghalensis: Bright, indirect light. Allow top two inches of soil to dry before watering. Potted plants will reach 5 - 10 ft tall.
