Vanilla planifolia is the Vanilla Orchid. This is the plant that Vanilla extract comes from. Vanilla is the second most expensive spice in the world, saffron being the most expensive. This is a native vine from Mexico and is grown commercially in Central and South America and Madagascar. It grows on short trellises in the shade of taller trees. Vanilla extract comes from the cured seed pods. The leaves are lance shaped succulent and dark green. The flowers are a greenish yellow color. This is an easy to grow novelty. You can tie it on a stake or let it hang over the container. Grow it in a well-drained potting soil.

Shade to partial sun, temp. 50 to 95 degrees, will vine to 10 to 15ft. tall, allow getting slightly dry between watering.

Family: Orchidaceae

I had one of these plants (from a different grower) years ago but it didn’t survive an out of state move. My experience with the other grower was nothing to complain about, but my experience with Steves Leaves has made me a convert. So far the plant is doing very well. The plant came in full and healthy with no pest. I was very surprised at how full and healthy the root system was. Not a single aerial root was crispy upon arrival. It has since acclimated to my dryer climate (with some aerial roots dying back only slightly) and is doing well. I’m looking forward to watching this plant as it begins to climb.
